The Washington University Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery was one of the earliest centers for thoracic surgery that encompassed clinical care, teaching and research. Evarts Graham, MD, first established the program and directed it himself in the 1930s. Graham is known for many outstanding achievements, including the first successful pneumonectomy (lung removal) for cancer in 1933.
Today, the division’s faculty is engaged in extensive basic science and clinical research in cardiac, thoracic and pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. It is also home to a residency program with rotations in all three subspecialties.
