Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery
Washington University pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons specialize
in treating children with congenital cardiac disorders requiring surgical
care.
Our surgeons treat a range of conditions, from those that are
relatively straightforward – such as atrial septal defects
– all the way to complex single ventricle anomalies. Particular
areas of interest include neonatal surgery of all types, surgery
for congenital heart disease, Marfan's syndrome, the Ross procedure
and the Fontan procedure as well as late complications following
that operation.
The transplantation program is another area of strength. The lung
transplant program at St. Louis Children's Hospital is the most
active of its kind in the world and attracts patients with cystic
fibrosis as well as other lethal lung diseases. Our pediatric heart
transplant program also is considered one of the leaders in the
United States.
A list of the more common procedures performed by our surgeons
includes:
- Closure of atrial or ventricular septal defects
- Repair of AV canal
- Repair of tetralogy of Fallot
- Norwood procedure
- Ross procedure
- Fontan procedure
- Glenn shunt procedure
- Repair of coarctation of the aorta
