Michael S. Avidan, MBBCh, DA, FCA

Michael S. Avidan, MBBCh, DA, FCA, is an associate professor of anesthesiology and surgery, and deputy director of clinical research in the Department of Anesthesiology, at Washington University School of Medicine.

Avidan received his medical degree (MBBCh) from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. After graduation from medical school, he received his residency training in anesthesia and critical care at the University of the Witwatersrand. He went on to serve as clinical lecturer in cardiothoracic anesthesia at King’s College in London, England.

Avidan has written a number of articles on airway management and management of intraoperative emergencies.

Avldan joined the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine in 2001. His duties include the educational and clinical oversight of the Cardiothoracic ICU.


Laureen L. Hill, M.D.

Vice Chairman, Department of Anesthesiology
Laureen L. Hill, M.D., is an associate professor of anesthesiology and surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.

Hill received her medical degree from the University of California, Davis. After graduating from medical school, she served a residency in anesthesiology and fellowships in critical care and cardiovascular anesthesia at Stanford University School of Medicine.

After completion of her residency and fellowships, Hill was an assistant professor of anesthesiology at Stanford University. She also served as medical director of the Extended Post-Anesthetic Care Unit and Critical Care Transport Service at Stanford Medical Center.

Hill joined the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine in 2000. Her duties include both the intraoperative anesthetic management of cardiothoracic surgical patients and educational and clinical oversight of the Cardiothoracic Surgical ICU. She also serves as medical director of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Center for Preoperative Assessment and Planning.

Charl deWet, MBChB

Medical Director, Cardiothoracic Surgical ICU

Charl deWet, MBChB, is an assistant professor of anesthesiology and surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.

De Wet received his medical degree (MBChB) from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Pretoria. After graduating from medical school, he completed a residency in anesthesiology at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

He came to the United States in 1994 and completed an internship in internal medicine at Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He then completed his residency education in anesthesiology at the University of Chicago and, during this time, also completed a rotation in cardiac anesthesia at the Texas Heart Institute. His training also included a fellowship in pediatric cardiac anesthesia at the University of California, San Francisco.

De Wet is board certified in critical care medicine and also holds certification in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography.
He is medical director of the Cardiothoracic Surgical ICU. His duties include both the intraoperative anesthetic management of cardiothoracic surgical patients and the educational and clinical oversight of the Cardiothoracic Surgical ICU.

Lee Collins, M.D.

Instructor in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology

Lee Collins, M.D., completed his anesthesiology residency at Washington University School of Medicine in 2005. He pursued two fellowships during his residency: one in cardiothoracic anesthesiology and one in critical care medicine.

Collins practices as an attending intensive care physician and also works as an attending physician in cardiothoracic anesthesiology.
